Beat the Texas Heat at These 4 Spots on the Water Near Austin

There’s no better way to beat the heat than a day on the water – and Austin is plenty hot in the summer. Luckily, 21 Rio’s West Campus location is close to a variety of options perfect for swimming, floating, and having fun. Here’s everything you want to know about where to cool down in Austin this season.

What’s The Best Spot Close to Town?

At the eastern end of the Barton Creek Greenbelt you’ll find a perfect little swimming spot called Campbell’s Hole that’s popular with the locals – so be sure to get there early! Access is easy, either by way of the Spyglass Trailhead at Spyglass Drive and Barton Skyway, or any of the many neighborhood entrances on Spyglass Drive. You can also access it from the other side of the creek by taking the Barton Creek Greenbelt Trail at Barton Hills School Park to the creek’s edge and following that until you come upon a clearing and some cliffs. Don’t forget the sunblock!

Where Is the Best Place to Cool Down in Town?

Sometimes you don’t want to go far for a cold swim. Barton Springs Municipal Pool is so close you can ride your bike there – just 3 miles from your 21 Rio apartment! But just because it’s close doesn’t mean it isn’t cold. This city pool is fed from an underground spring, keeping its temperature at a crisp 68 to 70 degrees, year-round.

Where Can I Go for a Beach-Like Experience?

Established in 1954, West Lake Beach is one of Austin’s favorite beach hangouts. It features a sandy beach, picnic benches, water volleyball court, and warm lake water fed from the Colorado River. This beach is privately owned and only open weekends, with weekday visits available by special arrangement. There is also an admission fee, so be sure to check their website for the full details before heading out.

Where Is Austin’s Prettiest Swimming Hole?

Imagine cool water spilling through carved limestone into beautiful pools in a quiet, serene setting. That’s just what you’ll find at Onion Creek in McKinney Falls State Park. Best of all, this park is located just under 12 miles from 21 Rio. So grab your floaty and get going!

If you’d rather cool off closer to home, just head upstairs to 21 Rio’s awesome rooftop pool and sundeck.
